Illness and suffering are a fact of life, and the Church walks alongside those who are sick, undergoing treatment for illness or are dying. We know that in Christ Jesus, we have a God who understands human suffering, as He Himself suffered.
In earlier times, the Church reserved anointing for those at the point of death. However, a deeper understanding of human frailty and the healing brought about by this sacrament means that the Anointing of the Sick is now offered to anyone undergoing a serious illness, those facing surgery, the elderly and those who are dying. Often, this sacrament is celebrated in a person’s home or in the hospital. It is also fitting to celebrate within the Mass and to offer the sacrament communally.
The priest lays his hands on the person receiving this sacrament, then anoints them with blessed oil. The Church asks that God give strength to the person who is sick and that they be more closely united with Christ in their suffering. Healing, if it is God’s will, is requested as well.
The Church does offer particular solace to those who are dying. Viaticum (meaning “food for the journey”) is Eucharist offered to those who are close to death.

La Unción de los Enfermos
La enfermedad y el sufrimiento son un hecho de la vida, y la Iglesia camina junto a aquellos que están enfermos, recibiendo tratamiento para una enfermedad o están muriendo. Sabemos que, en Cristo Jesús, tenemos un Dios que entiende el sufrimiento humano, ya que él mismo sufrió.
En tiempos anteriores, la Iglesia reservaba la unción para aquellos en el punto de la muerte. Sin embargo, una comprensión más profunda de la fragilidad humana y la sanación que trae este sacramento significa que la Unción de los Enfermos ahora se ofrece a cualquier persona que esté pasando por una enfermedad grave, aquellos que enfrentan una cirugía, los ancianos y aquellos que están muriendo. A menudo, este sacramento se celebra en el hogar de una persona o en el hospital. También es apropiado celebrarlo dentro de la Misa y ofrecer el sacramento de manera comunitaria.
El sacerdote impone sus manos sobre la persona que recibe este sacramento, luego los unge con aceite bendito. La Iglesia pide que Dios dé fuerza a la persona que está enferma y que se una más estrechamente con Cristo en su sufrimiento. También se solicita la sanación, si es la voluntad de Dios.
La Iglesia ofrece un consuelo particular a aquellos que están muriendo. El Viático (que significa “alimento para el viaje”) es la Eucaristía ofrecida a aquellos que están cerca de la muerte.
